A tragic train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel critical opposition regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.
The crash took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link built to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.
“We are going to thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this accident,” affirmed the country's president.
The president announced that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The president noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those involved.
Major Initiative of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the immediate past president, whose term ended the previous year. This project was closely associated with his leadership's economic vision for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to stimulate the economy of a comparatively less developed part of the country.
Building Management and Safety Concerns
The development of both train projects was supervised by the army, marking a notable expansion of its duties in national works. They were built at an fast-tracked rate, beating forecasts to be partially opened before the end of that government.
However, this accelerated timeline had also sparked persistent concerns over safety standards.
- Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This encompasses an previous collision this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-deadly derailments.
Calls for Review and Suspension
In the wake of the tragedy, the chief of a key rival party called for an immediate suspension in the development and management of all comparable projects.
This pause was requested pending a full independent investigation. The party emphasized that the situation "calls for swift accountability."
In reply, the head of state maintained that the train had been operating in full adherence to all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the development and running of these vital projects.
