Users Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Jabs Gain Back Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

New research indicates that individuals who discontinue blockbuster slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass much more quickly than those who stop traditional lifestyle regimens.

Findings released in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while obese people often shed about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Users using such medications must be informed of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain implies a return to original weight in about one and a half years.

Comparing Treatments

The study, which examined 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with other pills.

Researchers point out that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically experience a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Explaining the Rapid Regain

Doctors suggest the mode of action of the injections accounts for the accelerated rebound.

These medications copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could reduce sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is unsuppressed, making excessive eating much more probable."

A Lifelong Disease?

Medical guidelines suggest the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians argue that, considering the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy might need to be long-term.

This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "highlight the chronic character of obesity," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.

User Accounts

People who have stopped the medication describe a powerful return of cravings.

"It was like a switch activating and you become ravenous," recalled an individual.

This difficulty is worsened if patients have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Significant Interest

Figures show that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with demand continuing to grow.

  • Use is greater among women compared to men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Finally, experts caution that while these medications are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone solution and maintained weight loss relies on integrated lifestyle management.
